Plaintiff Arguments [Dec 20, 2009]

We are supposed to stay with the Trotters for Christmas and the original plan involved us in the extra bedroom with no other guests in the house. Now his sister and her 2 young kids are coming. They insist upon having the extra bed room which I can understand. However, this leaves us to sleep on a blow up bed in the den. With the kids getting up at 6am, I think this is going to be a real problem. We like to stay up til well past midnight and enjoy his family's company so getting only a few hours sleep is not something I look forward to on my holiday.

I would love for him to stand up to his sister but he is afraid of her. Therefore, plan b is to get a hotel but he wont because he is afraid of insulting his mother. I say he should think of his wife first.

Defendant Arguments [Dec 20, 2009]

It's not that I am afraid to say something but more that I know what the outcome is going to be. My mom will feel like it was her fault and my sister will feel insulted. I dont want to sleep out there either but I do want to be with my family and enjoy some scotch with my dad. By getting a hotel, we would not be able to drink because one of us would have to drive.

I would rather leave it as is. Drinking is more important than sleeping and keeping my mouth shut is more important than a few hours of shut eye.

Sometimes you just have to bite the bullet to keep the peace with the family. If it was a regular occurance, you'd have to sort it out. If it's once or twice a year, roll with it.

I would get a room, party with the family, and the next morning, get up and go to the hotel to get some rest. It is miserable to be trapped in a place where you can't find anywhere to get some much needed sleep.

what about hiring/borrowing a caravan so you can still have your privacy yet not have to travel to accomodation. Park it in their yard on on the street

Family Yes - Drinking No
I was with the Defendant, right up until he started going on about drinking... being able to get drunk is no reason to upset your wife. If he'd have said that it was so that he could share Xmas morning with his nephews/nieces, or just be around for the whole of Xmas, I would have understood... but, just to be able to get drunk, that's no reason.

there comes a time in life where you have to step up and be a man. Sit down talk to your mother tell her whats going on in your own words and let your mother sort it out and find better sleeping arrangements. Communicating is the key to any relationship. With parents, family or the most important your wife. She know where you sleep. And you might be just doing this on your own if you dont pick your battles well.

in all probability, they probably wish you would stay somewhere else. for appearances sake, they have to insist you stay.

Wow..
...way to earn the title "pain in the ass daughter-in-law" from the family. Good luck with that approach.
