Plaintiff Arguments [Feb 6, 2010]

In September, Chris will be going off to college so I recommend that he clean up his street tongue a bit. While the occassional cuss word is probably ok on a college campus, there are a few words he uses that I think he should remove from his vocabulary.

I often hear him referring to situations and saying "That is so gay." Obviously, this could be highly offensive. The other is when he and his friends call each other "retards." They do not know anyone with down syndrome so they are not sensitive to the word. When they go to college, he may call someone a "retard" and not have any idea that the person has a brother or sister with downs.

I get that kids say things that they shouldnt and sometimes its just to fit in. However, going off to school with a whole new group of people will force you to fit in again. Its probably best to speack with a little more maturity.

I know those words are offensive if used in a different way but we dont use them in that way. If I called a person gay then it is offensive. If i Rick scores a touchdown on me in Madden football and i say "Thats gay" then who am I offending? The digital 1985 Bears? Same goes with retard. When Ms. Hayes made us go to the opera to for music class, I said it was retarded. Who did I offend? The opera? I was simply pointing out a stupid idea.

Its not like I am going to walk up to the first group of friends in orientation and say "Whay up retards?! Do we have any gays here?"

Wow... The defendant actually convinced me to vote the other way. I don't think you should remove the words from you vocabulary because frankly, you will learn much worse at college. However, you have it ass backwards. Ironically, it would be acceptable to ask if there are any 'gays' in the room because that is what they are called. Fine, there are more tactful ways of asking... but it is "LGBT" (lesbian, 'gay,' bi, and transgendered). Where as, by calling the videogame 'gay' you are implying a defect and analogizing it with homosexuality.
