Plaintiff Arguments [Feb 8, 2010]

My wife is home with the kids who are really pretty easy to manage. One goes to school and the other is an infant who sleeps most of the day. She wants to get a nanny to "free up some time" so she can get errands done. When asked what errands she needed to get done, she didnt have specifics. I know these include: shopping, getting her nails done, shopping, going to Starbucks and Barnes and Noble and shopping.

A nanny twice per week is about $200. If she is spending on top of that then it gets expensive really quickly. There really arent any real errands that she cannot do with the kids. If she wants to go get her nails done, I would just take the kids for a few hours and let her go. This isnt good enough. She wants a nanny.

Defendant Arguments [Feb 9, 2010]

Errands do not always mean going to the post office or going to buy some milk and eggs at the store. Sometimes I need to do other things like go to the gym, get my hair cut, get the laundry done, etc. These are all things you get to do while I watch the kids. Unfortunately, most of this stuff cannot be done at 8pm...the time you get home from work. Believe it or not, I still need to get my hair cut, I still need to try to stay in shape and I still have a ton of things to do around the house. If you cannot take the kids, how else am I supposed to get it done. You leave me no choice.

Sounds pretty spoiled.

Typical case of a woman that wants to be a stay-at-home mom and gets her wish and then realizes that she cant shop while staying at home. Well guess what, your husband cant drink beer and watch sports while he is at work so deal with it. Its called sacrifice.

Cant you just get a nanny on a as-needed basis?
Dodge wrote:[Feb 8, 2010]
Unfortunately you cannot. They want to fill their weeks with a consistent schedule. Two days is the minimum or they dub you "not worth their time." Its a racket.

I'll be your nanny.

when is she entering her argument? i need to know all info before i make my decision.
dh4645 wrote:[Feb 9, 2010]
i can understand the gym argument, but the other errands you can easily take your kids with, right?? how old are they? dont you have a washer/dryer at home for laundry? what other things do you want to do where it's not possible to take the kids along? he also says he will take the kids when you need to go do things by yourself...meaning the errands you can only do by yourself and can't possibly take the kids along. needs some more info before i vote.

I cant take the kids with me to the hairdresser or the gym. He says he will take the kids but that means limiting it to Sat - Sun. The rest of the week he is working.
dh4645 wrote:[Feb 9, 2010]
As I said I can understand the gym part...as should he. :-) But, why not the hairdresser? People take their kids to those places all the time or you can just go on a weekend while he watches the kids. As I asked above, how old are they? Also, how many? What are his work hours? Is the gym and hairdresser your only points of contention?

Getting a nanny is a bad idea
1) Nannies would never take care of your children properly like you could 2) The guy is at work why? To provide for the family. He works all day and he is still trying to help you out. What more do you want? 3) As for the gym well why don't you buy weights or exercise equipment and work out at home it ll be faster and more convienent. Also body weight exercises are better to get in shape. And if you want to do cardio you can get a treadmill or run in your basement or climb stairs best cardio exercises ever.you don't need a gym to workout. As for a hairdresser, make an appointment for the weekend. 4) Lastly if you really need someone to look after the kids why not ask your or your husband's parents.

Its ok to try it
Im going to side with the lady. Even though the plaintiffs argument gave the impressionthe defendent is spoiled... Its obvious the plaintiff is underestimating the defendents workload. The defendent has needs and one of them might be a brake from routine. I say, be open minded and do a trial period. After the trial period discuss if the money spent has really improved the relationship and her stress/time.

Gotta go with the plaintiff...
...I understand that stay-at-home moms need a break. But regularly spending $200 a week is extravagent. If you can't arrange for a family member to watch the kids one or two afternoons a week, you could try to make arrangements with another mom to trade babysitting duties. Or hire a high school student or college student to babysit two afternoons a week. I'm not sure what the going rate is for babysitters is but, even at $10/hour, you could have two four-hour breaks for $80/week instead of $200 a week.
runswithscissors wrote:[Feb 9, 2010]
obviously she has no comprehension of the value of a dollar. $200 bucks a week is the bring home pay of a 40 hour per week worker. Let this young lady learn what it takes to earn that amount.
dh4645 wrote:[Feb 9, 2010]
to runs comment above: your crazy? $200 bucks in a week. that's a little low. it's more like $500 week. i told my wife about this and she had points for both sides, but also sided with the plaintiff and said many gyms have a place where they watch your kid(s) while you work out.
Mensa_dventure wrote:[Feb 10, 2010]
For some reason I think this case would be so much less dramatic if you said babysitter. Would anyone have a problem with getting a babysitter for a few hours so she can run out? The word "Nanny" just triggers all kinds of emotions in people based on ideas that it is a luxury and that nannies wind up raising the kids. Just get a "Babysitter" once or twice a week and I bet the confrontation goes away.

minimum wage is $7.15 times 40 equals bring home about $260.
dh4645 wrote:[Feb 10, 2010]
oh, i didnt think you were talking min wage. who works 40 hrs a week at min wage? suckers, that's who.
runswithscissors wrote:[Feb 10, 2010]
no, suckers live off foodstamps and welfare. people with kids to feed and no job work for what ever they can get their hands on. The real unemployment and underemployed rate is closer to 40%, that is 2 out of 5 people.
