Plaintiff Arguments [Mar 7, 2010]
My mother is a very religious person. I consider myself a Catholic but I am not as old school as she is. During the four week period of Lent, Catholics are supposed to sacrifice some of the pleasures in their lives. Every Friday, they are supposed to abstain from eating meat. I try to be good and give up pizza or soda during the four weeks but I sometimes forget not to eat meat. And to tell you the truth, I dont care. Not eating meat does not do anything for me spiritually. My mom gives me HELL about it though. Friday night, I had a turkey sandwich and you would have thought that I proclaimed my love for the devil with the rant she threw at me. Mom, not everyone follows all the laws of the church. Many of them are antiquated and do not fit in with today's society. This is why the church is losing members quickly.
Defendant Arguments [Mar 8, 2010]
Sorry I am late!!! I think that you should consider this. It is obviously not easy for you to abstain from eating meat so by doing so, it would be a sacrifice. That is why they have the rule. If it were easy, there would be no point to it. I think you failed to miss the point here.

Oh dear......
....a touchy subject for sure. This should be interesting.

I went to Catholic school for 12 years and went to church every sunday. I followed the letter of the Catholic law as closely as possible. Only one problem...the church doesnt want me because Im gay! I say screw their rules and do what is right for you to live a spiritual life. Why would you want to belong to a group who alienates their members. Its like a big fat God clique.

I think Mom has to do her duty and try to pass on the religious beliefs to her son. You are only 18 so Mom is much more wise in her years.

Not so hard
It's not so hard to sacrifice eating meat one day a week for a few weeks, when I was growing up it was all year. It would mean alot to your mom to see you going in the right direction.

my vote is for the plaintiff. mom's can teach their kids about life, love, religion, etc, but it's ultimately up to the children how they want to live their lives. i could say tmanymore specific tihngs about how not to be an overbearing parent, but the first sentence pretty much sums it up nicely.

I believe in God, but not religion...

......you can lead a horse to water but you can't make it drink. In saying that, your son is now an adult and as such has to make his own decisions, they may not be to your standards and you may not like them but they ARE his. The more you push the more he will rebel and let's face facts one day you will be gone and do you really want his memory of you to be the fact that you made such a big deal about religion? Love your son for the man he is becoming and while I do believe in God I also don't believe in religion. There are plenty of rules made by churches that don't make you any more Christian.

Failed to miss the point? What the hell does that mean?
dh4645 wrote:[Mar 9, 2010]
i guess the point is, is that sacrifice isn't easy. wow, thanks captain obvious!!! how does not eating meat on fridays make you more of a Catholic??? ANSWER: IT DOESNT!
Quimichu wrote:[Mar 9, 2010]
As much as I agree on the fact that not eating meat on fridays doesn't make you more of a good person, I agree even more on the old saying "My house, my rules"

You should show him the first hour or so of the movie FOOD.INC on DVD. That should Stop anyone from eating meat.
